the newest generation of African emigrants. You’ll know us by our funny blend of london fashion, New York jargon, African ethics, and academic successes. Some of us are ethnic mixes, ex. Ghanaian and Canadian, Nigerian and Swiss; others merely cultural mutts: American accent, European affect, African ethos. Most of us are multilingual: in addition to English and a Romantic language or two, we understand some indigenous tongue and speak a few urban vernaculars. There is at least one place on The African Continent to which we tie our sense of self: be it a nation-state, a city, or an auntie’s kitchen. Then there’s the great city or two (or three) that we know like the backs of our hands, and the various institutions that know us for our famed focus. We are Afropolitans: not citizens, but Africans of the world.
Make God your foundation in all that you do: work, school, relationships. He wants your success and not your failure, your happiness and not your sadness. Beat the devil down by giving thanks and praise to God no matter what you may be going through for as many time we forsake God, He remains forever faithful to His word. He is able. Amen.
Planking = slavers stacked slaves on plank beds face down, on top of each other, hands chained to their waist and called it planking the slaves. Slaves were forces to sit in own bodily fluids as well as others. This created unsanitary living environment causing many to die and because slavers didn’t care, they left the dead planked and chained with the remaining slaves.

I love affection but I’m the type of person that needs distance to be happy. Let me be able to miss you. Let me be able to imagine all the things we can do/talk about. Let me be able to forget about you for a second. If we talk all day & all night then try to make plans the next day, don’t be mad…
Attempting to list a few people who I can call and be completely comfortable talking to or being around, I couldn’t even come up with a small handful. I don’t have that many close friends, it makes me quite a while to build enough trust into someone to even be they’re friend rather than just acquaintances. As for my old friends, everyone changed, even myself. We all seemed to have drifted away.
